Forget Black Friday! There’s a new post-Thanksgiving shopping holiday in town. And it doesn’t carry the stigma of making workers miss Thanksgiving with their families: it's called Small Business Saturday.

OK, it’s not that new, but since American Express began it in 2010 (yes, it’s a corporate holiday, but we can still like it), Small Business Saturday (SBS) has been a major boon for local small businesses.

This year SBS falls on November 26. That’s like, really soon, so it’s time to get moving on your strategies for Small Business Saturday success!

This is a great article showing how retailers are banding together to leverage the power of community in order to boost consumer traffic to their stores on SBS.

From the article: “I think more people want to make the holiday about something more than just driving to the mall, going to the department stores, and fighting the crowds and Small Business Saturday is a reflection of that.”

Yes, Small Business Saturday (SBS) has been aimed at retailers, restaurateurs, and the foot traffic they produce. But there are plethora small businesses out there that don’t fit this demographic. Well, they’ve been finding creative ways to break the mold and capitalize on their status as small business to get in on the sentimental love shoppers have for the little guy.

If this is you, here’s how to do it.

It’s always valuable to look back, evaluate, and try to pinpoint trends for the future. Small Business Saturday is a great case for this.

Probably the most important takeaway from this article: SBS feels a little bit like a one-hit-wonder holiday for many small businesses. But that doesn’t mean they’re giving up on it. On the contrary! Small businesses are finding ways to leverage the Shop Small concept throughout the holidays. And there’s a good chance they’re strategy is already paying off.
