6 Ways to Become Relevant Marketing on Pinterest

by Megan Totka

Sometimes as a small business owner, you may get overwhelmed with all the latest and greatest Internet bells and whistles.  As you heard and obliged, every business should use Facebook and Twitter. Now that you have those sites mastered, Pinterest is knocking at your door and you’re wondering if you should open it.  The answer is yes — it’s a small business marketing opportunity worth considering; Pinterest generates four times more revenue per click than Twitter and 27 percent more than Facebook. Pinterest is essentially a brand that allows you to create a visual online pinboard organized by topics of your choice.  It’s a lot more than a place where women plan weddings and their dream homes, although that does happen frequently. This social media platform is actually a very valuable marketing tool for small businesses because it drives traffic. Here are six tips to get you marketing on Pinterest to promote your business in a way that is no-hype, customer-friendly, low-key and chock full of value:

Promote user-generated content

A guest pinner board is a great way to generate customer engagement. Encourage your visitors to add videos and photos that are relevant to your business. To drive traffic, run an engaging Pinterest competition. You could invite your customers to share useful or interesting pins on a specified topic of your choice and offer an amazing prize to fuel the competition.

Use strong visuals with each and every post

Think captivating when it comes to image selection—images that are strong are more likely to get repined than run-of-the-mill photos.  Make sure to include an image with each blog post you put up to give you an opportunity to re-pin it — and point traffic towards your business website.

Pin videos too

In addition to pictures, pin videos if you want to really maximize your Pinterest presence.  When you see relevant news clips, YouTube or Vine videos or interviews, pin them for your viewers to see too. Video marketing for small business owners can be powerful if you select the videos you share with care.

Introduce your team members

While Pinterest is typically an online platform that highlights your hobbies and interests, it also can serve as a way to let your customers see behind-the-scenes shots of your company. Use it to introduce your staff members, show photos or videos clips from company events and even share actual production of your products when appropriate.

Create an FAQ for working with your business

This is equivalent to the owner’s manual of your business.  How can clients effectively work alongside your business? What are the most commonly asked questions about your products or services? A glossary of frequently used terms that correspond with your expertise could also be helpful. This board can act as a landing board to field questions from potential customers and explain to them how to best take advantage of your business offerings.

Become an authority

Provide high quality content exclusively and regularly. If you know your industry like the back of your hand, create boards that give others ideas and aid in problem solving. It will make you well-known as a person of authority in your area of expertise. While learning the ins and outs of another social media platform may sound daunting, it doesn’t have to be. Pinterest is an intuitive, simple and fun way to drive business traffic and a social media tool you don’t want to neglect. How has your small business taken advantage of Pinterest offerings?
