5 Things You Need to Read: The Podcast Edition

Created with Sketch.
Ellis Friedman

Is there a voice inside your head—a voice that sounds suspiciously like Ira Glass or Gary Vaynerchuk—that keeps wondering if you should start a podcast?

Well, you should.

OK, maybe it’s not that simple. Podcasting isn’t for everyone—of course, you not only need an audience, but you need something to give them, and you also need the time to do it. But podcasting can be for everyone, and it certainly can help grow your business. Check out these resources, examples, tips, et cetera, from resources around the web.

Podcasting for Two Years, Now What? (via @libsyn

You may not have been podcasting for two seconds, let alone two years, but regardless of how long you have or haven’t been podcasting, this article is full of great advice. For example, Libsyn recommends that if you’ve been podcasting for two years, you should be OK with small numbers.

Small numbers after two years?! Yep, you read that interrobang (?!) right. It’s not all about the numbers, it’s about providing value to people who find your podcast even years after you’ve created it. So if you’re just starting out, start with this approach. And if you’ve already dipped your toe in, keep this in mind as you develop your podcast.

Podcasting: Fact Sheet (via @pewresearch)

This piece from Pew Research does not have the most scintillating title, but it does have a lot of great data about who listens to podcasts, who knows what podcasting is, and which publications or businesses are jumping into the podcasting pool.

The fact sheet will be excellent for getting perspective on how podcasting is measured and how it’s growing, a critical thing to know if you’re going to invest your time and money into podcasting.

The Small Business Success Podcast (via @Infusionsoft

As one of the producers of The Small Business Success Podcast, I’d be remiss in not including it in the roundup. In it, we talk to small business owners around the world about their stories—how they got started, their biggest triumphs and struggles, and how they’re working through issues like hiring or firing employees, or how they made it through the Great Recession.

[And if you have a great story about your small business and want to be on the podcast, please email us at [email protected]. /end shameless plug]
