The Leader's Responsibility
“There are no bad teams, only bad leaders”
That quote comes from a book called “Extreme Ownership.” It’s a fitting description of the importance of leadership at SBS stages three through five. When the team isn’t performing, it’s the leader’s fault. Most people don’t want to take on that type of extreme ownership, but it’s exactly what’s needed for success.
If the team is losing, it’s the leader’s responsibility. If the team is winning, it’s because of the players. This notion is not normal for human beings to grasp. We naturally feel like the credit during winning times should go to the person who also takes the blame in losing times. (Most people aren’t even willing to take the blame in losing times!) But that’s not the way leadership works. As the quote says, “There’s no limit to what a man can accomplish if he doesn’t care who gets the credit.”
Leaders always take the blame and never take the credit.
SBS Idea of the Day: If your business is in stage three, four, or five, and you aren’t achieving the success you desire, ask yourself whether you believe this principle. If you don’t, go to work on yourself and get to the point where you believe it. When you do, your business will improve.
