Throughout 2007, I’ve spent a lot of time talking to industry gurus, media types and prospective investors about Infusion Software. It’s all been done in an effort to attract more attention and more capital to the company so that we can achieve our mission to revolutionize the way small businesses drive and manage their growth.
The good news is, the response from the people I’ve spoken with has been phenomenal. Everybody recognizes how badly this software is needed by small businesses that want to grow quickly and profitably. We’ve received a ton of press and we’re raising the capital we need to continue serving small businesses everywhere.
But one question I constantly get from these folks that really annoys me is this: “It’s not just small businesses that need this kind of sales and marketing software—bigger businesses need it too. So, will you be moving “upstream” in the market, providing your software to mid-sized and large companies?”
Here’s why this question annoys me. It assumes that selling software to big companies is a “greener pasture” for a company like Infusion Software. These folks point out that it is very common for software companies to start by selling to small businesses and then abandon them to sell higher-priced software to larger companies.
But here’s the bottom line: when people ask me the “greener pastures” question, they don’t realize that Infusion Software is on a mission to help small businesses grow their companies. We’re not on a mission to make the most money by selling to the fewest customers. We’re out to change the world. And we’re doing it. One small business at a time.
So, just in case you’ve ever wondered if Infusion will abandon small businesses and sell to larger companies, relax. We’re in this to help you grow your business. We’re on a mission to revolutionize the way small businesses drive and manage their growth.

Executive Spotlight: Dave Lee Shares Sales & Marketing Tricks!
Hola! I’m Dave Lee, Vice President of Moneymaking. I help Infusion Software make money through our marketing, sales, and business development efforts. I love technology… and I love selling it even more. More importantly though, I love helping our customers make more money too! Just recently, I met with a group of a dozen or so customers for a special ½ day session to share ideas, see how everyone is using the CRM, and talk about the latest ‘must-use’ new features. I left the session with some intense impressions:
- Our customers are AWESOME – extremely talented, driven, and successful
- There are a bunch of money-making features in the software our customers are just starting to explore using- they can do even more with them!
- We need to get together more often: virtually and in-person
Fortunately, we’ve already got some really cool things in the works to address items 2 & 3, but I don’t have enough space to elaborate. What I can do is share with you some of the things we’ve done in sales & marketing to achieve over 900% growth during the past three years, both CRM and non-CRM related (I’m giving you permission to swipe these!):
We’re relentless about using the software for all forms of lead generation, capture, and conversion. Once we have the lead, it enters one of many marketing sequences for automated and personalized follow-up, education, etc. We also chain together follow-up sequences so we’re always in front of the prospect until they “buy or dies.” To give you an idea, our “Master Follow-up Campaign” includes 45 steps with e-mail, fax, live phone calls, voice broadcasts and direct mail pieces… and runs for 33 days. Then the prospect gets added to our long-term follow-up campaign.
One of the quickest ways we built our prospect list has been to partner with people who already have a list and then pay a commission or royalty for sales generated. Just make sure you’re the one capturing those leads so you can build your list. We use the affiliate module within the CRM to track affiliate and JV leads – so we can properly pay out commissions when a lead becomes a customer.
We don’t waste time on prospects that aren’t ready to buy yet. We let the software manage the ‘hoops’ that prospects need to jump through before we assign out the lead to a sales rep for one-on-one follow-up (using the sales force automation and pipeline features in the CRM).
Copywriting is critical to successful promotions, campaigns, follow-up sequences, and sales letters. If you haven’t found a good copywriter yet, keep looking – it’s the difference between mediocre sales and extraordinary results. This has been proven to be true for us.
We use the “Trackable Link Action Sequences” as much as possible for automated sub-listing, one-click registrations for tele-seminars & events, and even for product sales. When using this feature, our event registration rate increased by 520% (actual attendance was up by 330%).
A solid, well-tested landing or squeeze page can bring in a LOT of leads. We’ve been tweaking our landing pages for maximum results for a long time now. Recently, my Internet Marketing Manager discovered some additional short-cuts by attending a marketing teleseminar on landing pages. We've implemented some of the ideas and are getting awesome results. To see and/or study one of our landing pages, visit http://www.infusionsoft.com/landingpage. The current layout, color, headline, required fields, and copy is converting 65.5% of clicks from a banner ad or ad text link. That's a HUGE conversion rate!
We try to capture as much prospect information as possible. We’ll start by maximizing opt-ins for our product tour, white paper, or free report by collecting just a name and e-mail. On the success page, we’ll offer more information or a live demonstration if they also provide phone, fax, and company name. We pre-fill the form on the success page with their name and e-mail from the previous form. When a prospect sees their name and e-mail already filled-in and there are only three more boxes left, the human tendency to ‘complete things’ kicks in and we’re able to collect more contact info (over 85% go on to give us additional contact info). This can continue until you’ve exchanged a set of valuable information for complete contact information on your prospect.
One final comment: The secret to my success has been to hire (and hold onto) extremely talented and passionate employees. I have surrounded myself with people that are smarter and faster than me. I set goals and measure results like crazy, but I leave the ‘execution details’ up to each employee. This drives a huge amount of buy-in and empowerment, and frees them up to use their own creative minds to find successful solutions and nail their goals. By the way, I used to hire education and experience… now I also look for passion and drive.

A New Way To Build Customer Loyalty
At Infusion we have a strong desire to remember our original roots, our original passion, and our reason for existing- caring for our small business customers. To keep us focused on this, we launched a new company-wide customer loyalty building program called “Riding the Trains”.
For those of you who have lived in or visited a big city, and had to ride the subway to get around town, you know what “riding the trains” can be like. In some cities it’s awesome; in other cities, not so much! Many years ago (think back to the 80’s) in some major U.S. cities, the subway system was in deep trouble. The subway system in some cities was dirty, scary, not on time, and sometimes down right dangerous. Trouble was, the folks in charge of the transit system didn’t realize any of this.
Why? Because the folks in charge drove nice fancy cars to work. The Transit Authority leadership did not have to ride the trains to get to work or anywhere else for that matter. So, there was a big old disconnect between the riding public’s experience on the subways and leadership’s view of how they were doing.
A visionary new leader was hired to solve the problem. Among the first things he determined was that the Transit Authority leadership was out of touch with their customers - the people who really ride the trains. So, he came up with a program that required everyone who worked at the Transit Authority to “Ride the Trains” at least 2 days per week- forever! If they did not bring in their ticket stubs and suggestions/findings they had to pay $$ into a pool.
What does this have to do with us here at Infusion……we are going to start “Riding the Trains” to stay in touch with our customers. As we continue to grow, just like the subway system, sometimes it’s easy to get farther and farther away from our customers. I bet you’re thinking- hey, you don’t have trains at Infusion. Correct…but what we DO have is live customer contact going on every day!
Riding the Trains = Listening to live customer phone calls
We are excited about this program and can’t wait to start seeing the results. Is this something that makes sense for YOUR business? Maybe. This is just one creative customer loyalty building initiative- there are many more possibilities out there. The important thing is to stay in contact with your most important asset- your customers.
